Food Is How We Say ‘I Love You”
Saying I love you didn’t always come easy to my parents, and I’m sure that most children of immigrant parents could relate. Food was our love language. No matter how tired or how long their work day was, they would always make sure that my sister and I were well fed. Even if they didn’t always say “I love you,” the time, love, and care that was taken to prepare each meal was enough.
This series follows my relationship with food and my parents. The images are drawn from the times I’d stand beside them in the kitchen to try and learn how to cook like them. These moments were special to me and integral to my relationship with my parents. These paintings, the life I have now, and the opportunities set before me were made possible through their love and sacrifice. This show is how I say thank you.
